Bombers Wilkie Waterford Barrel - Brand new!  The wilkie cheekpiece is also called a Beval or Bevel

The Bomber Wilkie utilizes pressure on the poll and raises the bit in the horse’s mouth to achieve additional control without resorting to a stronger mouthpiece.

This is similar to the action of a ring bit but to a milder degree which is why it has found favour for use on ponies.

The Waterford Barrel has a few smooth flexible cylindrical components which spread the pressure points making it a light mouthpiece.

The Waterford is usually worn ¼” – ½” or 5mm – 10mm longer than your traditional mouthpiece in order to curve around the tongue and maximize the effect.

Bombers Wilkie Waterford Barrel – Action & Feel

The Bombers Wilkie Waterford Barrel is a refined leverage bit designed to encourage softness, flexion, and improved lateral control while remaining comfortable in the horse’s mouth.

The Waterford barrel mouthpiece is made up of multiple rounded links, allowing the bit to move freely and prevent the horse from leaning or taking hold. This promotes a lighter contact and encourages the horse to carry itself rather than brace against the rider’s hand.

The Wilkie (Beval) cheekpiece introduces mild poll pressure when the reins are engaged, helping to lift the forehand and improve balance without strong leverage. This makes the bit particularly effective for horses that tend to drop behind the contact or become heavy through the shoulders.

When pressure is applied:

  • The Waterford barrel distributes pressure evenly across the tongue and lips
  • The Wilkie cheek gently engages the poll
  • The combined action encourages responsiveness, softness, and improved steering

Overall, this bit offers enhanced control without harshness, making it well-suited for horses that lean, pull, or need help maintaining a consistent, light contact.

Best suited for:

  • Horses that lean or set against the bit
  • Riders seeking improved steering and balance
  • Jumping, show jumping, and fast-paced disciplines

Most orders only take about 10 days if a bit isn't in stock however,  if the APAC depot is out of stock and it needs to be ordered from the factory it could take 3 to 4 weeks - see exact dates HERE.
