Bombers Tom Thumb Moulded mullen. Brand new!

The moulded mouthpiece has been uniquely shaped and flattened. It is angled at 45 degrees to offer an exceptionally soft and evenly distributed pressure over and around the tongue. The internal flexible stainless-steel cable core has been injection moulded with a bespoke non-toxic, UV resistant, FDA approved flexible synthetic material. The Bombers moulded material has been uniquely developed, to ensure 3 key attributes; texture, durability and comfort.

The Tom Thumb is similar to the Ring bits or Dutch Gags and introduces poll pressure as well creating leverage on the mouthpiece. The main difference however is that instead of the additional rings at the bottom it has an extended shank with a ring on the end, this shank is bent and set to run at 45°. The effect this has is to ease up the poll pressure and leverage on the mouthpiece.

Moulded Mullen mouthpiece:

Especially good for the horse that objects to metal or when you have tried every kind of bit without luck. As with all our steel components, the cable core and cheek piece will be covered by our lifetime guarantee. The Bombers Lifetime Guarantee does not extend to materials that can be chewed.

Things to Watch / Limitations / Risks

While there are benefits, there are also considerations and potential drawbacks:

  • Leverage = amplification of error: Any bit with leverage is more punitive in the hands of a harsh or unbalanced rider. Even a “softer” mouthpiece cannot eliminate this risk.
  • Fit is critical: If the bit is too wide, too narrow, hung too low or too high, or misaligned, the advantages may be negated or turned into discomfort.
  • Chewing / wear: The moulded material, though durable, can be chewed or worn over time. As noted, Bombers’ lifetime guarantee excludes damage from chewing.
  • Not a cure-all: A bit won’t fix underlying training, balance or behavioral problems. The horse’s response still depends heavily on training, rider skill, consistency, and clear aids.
  • Individual variability: What works for one horse may not suit another. A horse’s mouth conformation, temperament, sensitivity, prior history, and soft tissue condition all influence bit choice.

If this bit is not in stock it usually only take about 10 days to get in however,  if the APAC depot is out of stock and it needs to be ordered from the factory it could take 3 to 4 weeks - see exact dates HERE.
