⭐ Bombers Kimblewick McHardy – Action & Benefits
The Bombers Kimblewick McHardy bit is designed to offer precise control, stability and comfort, making it ideal for horses that become strong, lean forward, or resist a traditional snaffle.
🔧 How it Works
-
Kimblewick leverage action:
The D-shaped cheek provides mild poll pressure and a subtle curb action when the rein is engaged, helping the rider maintain control without being harsh. -
McHardy mouthpiece:
Features a flexible ported metal mouthpiece reinforced with a softer central core.
This encourages:
✔ Tongue relief
✔ Softer acceptance of the bit
✔ Reduced pressure on the bars of the mouth -
Independent side action:
Allows the rider to lift one shoulder, correct crookedness and steer accurately without creating resistance through the whole mouth.
🐎 Ideal For
- Horses that pull, lean or get heavy
- Horses that object to tongue pressure
- Riders wanting more control than a snaffle provides, but less intensity than a curb or gag
🌟 Why Riders Love It
The Bombers Kimblewick McHardy offers a balanced feel, combining comfort with gentle leverage to promote softness, relaxation and clear communication—ultimately resulting in a more harmonious and confident ride.
As with the Pelham, the action of the Kimblewick is dependent upon the position of the riders hands. The rein slides on the Dee shaped bit ring. If the hands are lowered prior to pressure being applied to the reins, the rein will slide about an inch and the bit will assume roughly a 45° angle in the mouth. Causing the mouthpiece to act in a downward and backward motion on the lower jaw, this is complemented by a downward pressure on the poll, giving the bit a lowering action. There are 3 rein settings which increase or decrease the pressure.
A horse shaking its head when bit pressure is applied or trying to put its tongue over the bit are classic signs the horse has a sensitive tongue. With this in mind the McHardy was created, it has a medium port creating space for the tongue, relieving pressure. The Buster Roller in the middle increases bar pressure and as a result extends the head and brings the nose in giving more control.
Cheekpiece
The cheekpiece is available in 2 sizes, standard and a slightly smaller model for a pony. The standard size Kimblewick is also available with a shorter purchase, the Kimblewick Lite.
Reins can be attached at:
Bigger ring = Removes the poll pressure decreasing the mouthpiece leverage.
Middle small ring = Introduces light poll pressure leveraging the mouthpiece.
Lower side small ring = Introduces poll pressure leveraging the mouthpiece.
Overall effects of the bit
The bit consists of a mouthpiece inside the mouth and a cheekpiece acting outside the head. The overall effects of the bit should be mutually supportive and guiding aids for the horse, as the horse will not be able to understand the rider’s use of conflicting / mutually exclusive aids. When using stronger lever bit, the rider should be aware of and understand the operation of the bits and their effects. The unpleasant pressure or pain caused by the bit always causes resistance in the horse, like the so-called an escape reaction in which the rider loses contact or control of the horse. This type of loss of control of the horse usually only results in the choice of an even stronger bit, although the situation would usually require a softer alternative.
Most orders only take about 10 days if we don't have the bit in stock however, if the APAC depot is also out of stock and it needs to be ordered from the factory, it could take 3 to 4 weeks - see exact dates HERE.
